One Date That Does Not Move

A wedding has one date and the date does not move. Vendors are booked against it, flights are bought around it, and a hundred small decisions all assume every person in the party will be standing in the same place on Saturday afternoon.

Las Vegas weddings bring in people who are not from here, and they arrive a day or two early on purpose. That early window is where the trouble fits. A bachelor party ends in an argument outside a bar on Thursday night. A cousin gets stopped on Flamingo on the way to the rehearsal dinner and turns out to be carrying an old Nevada citation he forgot about, which by now is a bench warrant. Somebody gets booked into a facility the rest of the group cannot even name, and the first hour goes to working out whether Metro took him downtown or Henderson police took him to Basic Road.

Locating the person is the first task and it is more specific than people expect. Clark County has several booking facilities, run by different agencies, with different inmate searches and different courts behind them. A misdemeanor booked by Las Vegas city police routes to municipal court, while the same allegation a few miles east routes elsewhere entirely. A Las Vegas criminal defense practice that publishes a directory of Clark County booking facilities, with the inmate search links and the charges each facility commonly books, is a faster place to start at four in the morning than a search engine and a group chat full of guesses.

The second problem is the calendar, which is the planner's problem in disguise. An arrest on Thursday produces a court date, and court dates get set without any reference to a honeymoon itinerary. That is a scheduling question a lawyer can raise early and a much harder one to fix after the paperwork turns up in a suitcase three weeks later. Old warrants behave similarly. Nevada bench warrants do not expire on their own, so the relative who has spent years avoiding a Nevada courthouse is walking back into the one jurisdiction that can act on it, in the same week he badly wants to be standing at a chapel.

Planners already keep contacts for the predictable failures. The seamstress who does same day alterations. The florist who answers on a Sunday. This is the same kind of entry on the same kind of list, and it costs nothing to hold. Nobody has to bring it up during the toasts. One person in the party simply needs a number and the name of the county facility, filed next to the venue's after hours line.
